One Way Trump Can Win Over His Base and Democrats in February

Monday’s votes in Congress to end the three-day government shutdown punted the issue to February 8, meaning Congress and President Trump have a little more than two weeks to work out both funding for the government and unresolved issues around immigration.

President Trump, author of “Art of the Deal,” wondered aloud on Twitter on Tuesday whether Republicans and Democrats can reach a deal on immigration:

However, the self-proclaimed dealmaker can step in and make a deal that pleases both his Republican base and … wait for it … Democrats as well.

Why? The polls say so.

A poll released in mid-January found more opposition (62 percent) than support (35 percent) for a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico. But among Republicans, support for the wall is a whopping 75 percent to just 22 percent opposed.

But the same poll found widespread support for allowing so-called DREAMers – young, immigrants – to remain in the U.S. An overwhelming 84 percent of Americans support allowing DREAMers to remain, and only 11 percent want DREAMers to be deported.

Of course, Democrats support allowing DREAMers to stay by a 96-3 margin. But even Republicans (72-20), conservatives (74-19), and people who approve of President Trump (69-22) overwhelmingly want a deal for DREAMers to stay.

A deal that allows DREAMers to stay in the U.S., in exchange for funding for Trump’s border wall, would be one way for Trump to win the approval of voters on both sides of the aisle, and it can all be done in the next few weeks.
