One Week to Go Until Kavanaugh Hearings, and His Prospects Look Good

Judge Brett Kavanaugh is one week away from what will surely be one of the most important moments of his life: a four-day confirmation hearing for his nomination to the Supreme Court.

The hearing starts Tuesday, September 4 – many Americans are off on Monday, September 3, for Labor Day – and will run each day through Friday, September 7. Kavanaugh is expected to answer questions from senators – Republican and Democratic – on Wednesday, September 5 and Thursday, September 6.

With one week until the hearings, Kavanaugh’s prospects for confirmation are looking good. Axios reported over the weekend that there are “Fresh signs that Democrats won’t be able to stop Kavanaugh.”

We saw fresh signs this week that Democrats won’t be able to stop the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh. Axios spoke to the offices of the senators that the White House considers potential swing votes for the next Supreme Court Justice, and they’re saying all the things Team Kavanaugh would want to hear.

The bottom line: Even Democrats involved in the effort to oppose Kavanaugh’s nomination privately admitted to Axios that there will have to be a major new development for them to have any chance of killing his confirmation. They say they need an explosive document, or a trainwreck during the confirmation hearings.

Nearly every Democratic attempt to delay or hinder Kavanaugh’s confirmation, or his confirmation hearing, has fallen short. As Axios reported, one of the two key swing Republican senators, Susan Collins (R-ME), has said good things about her meeting with the judge. And some red-state Democrats appear open to supporting Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

All there is to do now is wait for next week’s hearings and see what Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and his allies dream up for their non-stop opposition to Kavanaugh next.
