Oregonian Ed Board Blasts Cap and Trade: ‘Half-Cocked,’ ‘Confusing,’ Scary

The Oregonian‘s editorial board issued a scathing editorial against the proposed cap-and-trade effort in the state, writing Sunday that it’s “half-cocked,” “confusing,” and scary.

A few highlights:

It is critical to take action on climate change but not half-cocked. That’s especially true when it’s unclear how much the new program would cost. Democrats say they’ve been talking about this type of policy for a decade. If so, why is it taking so long for state agencies to deliver the data necessary for the Legislative Revenue Office to analyze the potential cost?

…But so far, it appears Oregon’s program would launch all at once, applying a confusing set of various standards and programs to sectors, including transportation, industry and electric and gas utilities.

…But the scariest part is that this potential policy relies on Oregon’s Department of Environmental Quality, one of several state agencies in crisis.

The Oregonian is hardly a conservative paper. The editorial board endorsed liberal Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) for re-election in 2016.

If a paper sympathetic to the left side of the political aisle is so against the cap and trade effort, maybe it’s time to close the books on the bill.
