Organizer to McCaskill: Confront ‘Scourge of Racism’ in the Missouri Dem Party

Walle A. Amusa, an organizer and author in St. Louis, wrote a scathing op-ed, published Monday in the St. Louis American, calling on Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) to do more to confront “the scourge of racism and white privilege” in the Missouri Democratic Party.

As the highest elected official in the Missouri Democratic Party, McCaskill must lead in confronting the scourge of racism and white privilege in the state party. A recent letter circulated to counter state Rep. Bruce Franks Jr.’s demand for McCaskill to show up in black communities to address issues of concern to African Americans is a bad move. African Americans who support such a letter should check themselves before they wreck their political careers.

Amusa also claimed that McCaskill’s campaign manager stonewalled his requests for a meeting with McCaskill.

In July 2017, I requested a meeting with U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill to discuss several issues of concern to the St. Louis community. The Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, the NAACP, a representative from The St. Louis American and others agreed to participate in the meeting. For five months, the McCaskill campaign ignored the request. Then her campaign manager, David Kirby, played footsies, scheduling, cancelling, and finally refusing to respond to requests to confirm the meeting for the date and time that he suggested.

McCaskill has had a tense relationship with black leaders in Missouri in 2018. According to the Kansas City Star, McCaskill had asked African American elected officials in Kansas City and St. Louis to sign a letter “pushing back against comments made last month by Bruce Franks, a prominent black activist and state legislator from St. Louis, who called on McCaskill to ‘show up.'” Each declined.
