A website called MapLight, funded in large part by liberal donors, is attacking a super PAC linked to Gov. Rick Scott (R-FL) for receiving possible “illegal” campaign donations from private prisons.

Scott is running against Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) in this year’s U.S. Senate race.

According to MapLight, the company GEO Group’s $125,000 donation “to New Republican PAC, a super PAC supporting Scott’s Senate bid,” may have been an “illegal donation.”

MapLight reported:

“The company, GEO Group, operates 141 prisons in the United States. It has $471 million worth of contracts with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and is the controversial agency’s biggest contractor, according to an analysis by the investigative website Sludge. GEO has given more than $8.7 million to politicians during the last two decades, according to the National Institute on Money in Politics. The Boca Raton, Fla.-based company has spent another $8.4 million lobbying in Florida alone.”

“The questionable contribution occurred in April, when a GEO Group subsidiary donated $125,000 to New Republican PAC, a super PAC supporting Scott’s Senate bid. The contribution was made by GEO Acquisition II, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of GEO Group.”

For those unfamiliar with the website, MapLight alleges to be a “nonpartisan 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that reveals the influence of money in politics, informs and empowers voters, and advances reforms that promote a more responsive democracy.”

What MapLight fails to mention in their article is that they are in large part funded by liberal donors who are pushing to end private prisons.

One notable liberal donor to MapLight is the Open Society Foundations, which was founded by liberal billionaire George Soros. The prolific donor Soros spent $3 million in 2016 backing candidates who supported prison reform efforts.

The Laura and John Arnold Foundation (LJAF), which is focused on finding a data-driven solution to prison reform, has also donated to MapLight.

According to LJAF’s website:

“LJAF is exploring the opportunities for investment in this policy domain. Of particular interest is the decision to release an incarcerated individual prior to the completion of his or her sentence.”

LJAF then goes into a number of reasons why “in the years to come, LJAF hopes to define a unique contribution that we can make to this national reform movement.”

Other notable liberal donors to MapLight include: Arkay Foundation, Bauman Foundation, Blue Haven Initiative, Compton Foundation, Fight For Reform / End Citizens United, William And Flora Hewlett Foundation, Rockefeller Family Fund, and the Jennifer And Jonathan Allan Soros Foundation.
