Over Half of Senate Dems Call on Franken to Resign; Schumer Stays Silent

Twenty-four Democratic senators have now called on Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) to resign from the United States Senate as allegations of sexual assault against Franken continue to mount.

That means over 50 percent of the United States senators who caucus with the Democratic Party have now called for Franken to resign.

Notably absent from the growing list of senators calling for Franken’s resignation are Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who told reporters “no comment at this point,” before entering a lunch on Wednesday.

As for 2020 hopeful Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA).

According to an aide, Warren called Franken on Wednesday and told him that he should resign, but Warren has yet to make a public statement calling for his resignation.

Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA), who was the Democratic Party’s vice presidential nominee in 2016, told reporters on Wednesday he wants to talk to Franken before making a decision.

Then there is Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), who along with Franken serves the people of Minnesota. Klobuchar tweeted that she had spoken with Franken and expressed confidence Franken would make the right decision.

However, Klobuchar did not directly call for Franken’s resignations in her statement.

It appears that multiple allegations of sexual assault, and 23 fellow Senate Democrats calling for Franken’s resignation, isn’t enough for these supposed leaders of the Democratic Party to call for Franken’s resignation.

NOTE UPDATE:

This post has been updated to reflect that Sen. Sanders released a statement calling for Franken’s resignation:
