PA-18 Democrat: Life Begins at Conception, But I Support Abortion

Conor Lamb, the Democrat trying to win a Republican-leaning district in western Pennsylvania, just waded into the abortion debate, and his answer left some scratching their heads.

Lamb, 33, is running against state Rep. Rick Saccone, a Republican, in the special election to fill the vacancy left by Rep. Tim Murphy in PA-18.

When asked by The Weekly Standard whether he would support a 20-week abortion ban, he said no. But before he offered that reply, he offered that he does, in fact, believe life begins at conception:

Lamb has said throughout the campaign that he is personally opposed to abortion due to his Catholic faith, but he has indicated that belief would not translate into legislative action.

“We believe that life begins at conception,” he said, “but as a matter of separation of church and state, I think a woman has the right to choose under the law, so I would vote against” a ban on abortion after 20 weeks.

Lamb’s support for 20-week abortion is a more liberal position than Pennsylvania’s Democrat Sen. Bob Casey’s position. Casey voted in January in favor of a ban on abortions at 20 weeks.

The cognitive dissonance required to say that life begins at conception, and in the next breath, declare support for abortion after 20 weeks, the point at which a fetus can feel pain, is astounding. If Lamb is required to further explain this position to western Pennsylvania voters, he could have a real problem on his hands.

The special election for PA-18 is being held on March 13.
