Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) finds himself under fire this week from local papers around his home state of Pennsylvania, over his refusal to consider Judge Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court.

At least three opinion and editorial pieces over the past few days have criticized Casey’s decision to preemptively oppose Trump’s nominee to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy.

A Thursday editorial from the Williamsport-based Sun-Gazette accused the Democratic senator, up for re-election this year, of seeking a vice presidential spot next to Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) in 2020. “[T]he pre-emptive opposition and mischaracterizations of him by many of the senators who previously approved his Appellate Court nomination is embarrassing,” the board wrote.

Another editorial, published Monday in the Reading Eagle, called Casey’s knee-jerk resistance “unfortunate” in their first sentence. It only got worse from there.

“Rejecting a nominee before performing that review is a dereliction of duty – a simultaneous embrace of partisanship and a rejection of the Constitution,” the Eagle’s board argued. They cited other red-state Democratic senators who have not immediately thrown Kavanaugh under the bus, and pledged to consider the nominee.

And an opinion piece in PennLive, which provides news to central Pennsylvania, also trashed Casey’s resistance. Business owner and Republican strategist Charlie Gerow said that the Democrat’s rhetoric “defies reality.” He predicted that Casey could face problems over his opposition to Trump’s nominee:

What shines through is that Bob Casey is no longer the centrist Democrat in the mold of his father that first came onto the political scene. He’s taken several left turns through the years and recently has adopted hard left stands. That may cause him some trouble come November.

Gerow may be right, given the outcry from papers and citizens around the state.
