Ahead of competitive midterm elections, groups backed by Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) reported a major fundraising haul on Tuesday.

Politico‘s Playbook reported first:

THE HOUSE REPUBLICAN OUTSIDE GROUP’S MASSIVE 2017: THE CONGRESSIONAL LEADERSHIP FUND and its sister group, THE AMERICAN ACTION NETWORK raised $66 million in 2017 — a massive haul that will be needed to help limit losses in what’s expected to be a rough year for the House GOP. CLF, which discloses its donors, raised $26 million last year and has $15 million on hand. AAN does not disclose its donors. COMPARISON: The group says that in 2015, the two entities raised $7 million.

It’s a good start to 2018 for Ryan after he closed 2017 with the passage of a major tax overhaul that has been a goal of his, and the GOP’s, for decades.

After a focus on revenue in 2017, one of Ryan’s top priorities for 2018 is entitlement overhaul, which would tackle the other side of the budget: spending.

On the political front, though, Ryan is charged with defending the House majority. The president’s party historically has difficulties in midterm elections, but $66 million is a strong fundraising start to keeping the House led by the GOP.

Ryan’s counterpart, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), meanwhile, is dealing with threats to her leadership.
