Pelosi: Abolishing ICE Isn’t a Winning Message

"No, it's not a winning message. We should reform ICE. We should have oversight over ICE."

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said Friday that calling for the abolishment of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is not a “winning message” for Democrats running in 2018.

KQED reporter Scott Shafer asked Pelosi whether she thinks running on a message of abolishing ICE is a good message for Democrats in 2018.

“No, it’s not a winning message,” Pelosi said. “We should reform ICE. We should have oversight over ICE. But the fact is if we want to change ICE we have to win the election.”

Shafer followed up by asking Pelosi what she tells fellow Democrats who are running on this message.

Pelosi admitted that in some districts the issue of abolishing ICE is popular.

“But, the fact is that it gives grist to the mill to the president to go out there and say ‘see, I told you they don’t want to have any protection at the border,’ which is not true,” Pelosi said.
