Pelosi Elected Speaker of the 116th Congress

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was elected Speaker of the House of for the 116th Congress with 219 votes on Thursday.

Pelosi’s victory comes despite many House Democrats running on a message of new leadership in the House Democratic caucus.

More than a dozen House Democrats even went as far as to sign a letter saying they would not support Pelosi’s bid to be the next speaker after the 2018 midterm elections.

However, Pelosi was able to successfully swing the votes of several of those House Democrats who vowed to oppose her by promising to term limit herself to just four years in the role of speaker.

This is the second time Pelosi has been elected Speaker, and she remains the only woman to hold the third highest elected office in the United States.
