It didn’t take long for Nancy Pelosi to ruin the career of Kathleen Rice, who dared to say the Democrats should pick someone other than Pelosi as their leader.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) used her powerful position as leader of the House Democrats to block one of her political rivals from a sought-after committee position.

Despite the best efforts of the entire New York House Democrat delegation, Pelosi blocked a bid by Rep. Kathleen Rice (D-NY) to sit on the powerful House Judiciary Committee. It’s a move that “seemed like payback for Rice opposing Pelosi’s effort to regain the speakership after Democrats retook control of the House,” per Fox News.

Here’s how it went down, according to Politico:

Pelosi lobbied for other members to join the panel over Rice, leaving the third-term New York Democrat off a list of her preferred members for the committee during a tense closed-door meeting Tuesday night, according to multiple sources. The effort came despite a full-court push from the New York delegation to secure a spot for Rice, a former prosecutor, on the panel that oversees everything from impeachment to guns to immigration.

Following the results of the 2018 midterms, Rice penned an op-ed in the Washington Post laying out her case for new leadership among House Democrats. Democrats “have the opportunity to show voters that we will deliver on the promise of change on which we campaigned,” Rice wrote at the time.

In fairness to Pelosi, her ruthlessness is well known, and Rice likely knew what she was getting into when she challenged the California Democrat. In November, when Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-OH) publicly mulled challenging Pelosi for speaker, a nasty opposition research piece involving Fudge just happened to appear in her hometown paper.

Rice, a former prosecutor, would have been a valuable addition to the Judiciary Committee, her New York colleagues argued. Should Democrats bring articles of impeachment against President Trump, that process would be overseen by the Judiciary Committee.

“She was boxed out and the result was cooked before we walked in the room,” one source told Politico. “If you went by seniority then yes [she would have got the position]. But that’s not what happened. Scores being settled was first priority.“
