Pelosi: I Want to See Trump ‘in Prison’

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi reportedly told Democrats during a closed-door meeting that she wants to see President Donald Trump “in prison.” She made the remark during an intense debate about impeachment with Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY).

According to Politico, Nadler again raised the question with Pelosi about advancing impeachment proceedings against Trump. Pelosi has been resistant to calls for impeachment thus far, and frustration is boiling over on both the liberal and moderate sides of the caucus.

Pelosi reportedly said she wasn’t “open to the idea of impeaching Trump at this time,” before she made the remark about prison:

“I don’t want to see him impeached, I want to see him in prison,” Pelosi said, according to multiple Democratic sources familiar with the meeting. Instead of impeachment, Pelosi still prefers to see Trump defeated at the ballot box and then prosecuted for his alleged crimes, according to the sources.

The idea that Democrats could wait until Trump is out of office, when he no longer has immunity, to prosecute him has gained some traction in the caucus. Politico’s Renato Mariotti explained how that would work in a piece published Thursday.

While liberal members of the Democratic caucus continue to demand impeachment, the Daily Beast reports that more moderate members are “growing demoralized” over the party’s obsession with impeachment.

“We’re not anywhere close,” [Minnesota Democrat Colin] Peterson told The Daily Beast as he exited the House floor on Tuesday. He’s been pressing his colleagues in the House Democratic caucus to recognize that this simple fact should put impeachment fever to bed, for now. But he says he hasn’t had much luck.

“They’re not listening,” said Peterson. “I’ve tried, but it’s pretty hopeless.”

Regardless of the outcome, Democrats are spending more time and energy debating impeachment than pretty much any other topic at the moment. Whether that turns into anything fruitful for the party remains to be
