Pelosi Mangles ‘Green New Deal’ Name, Says ‘Nobody Knows What It Is’

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appeared to criticize the Green New Deal by mangling its name and openly questioning what the proposal contains during an interview with Politico on Wednesday. Pelosi’s remarks were published Thursday, the same morning that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) are expected to unveil details of the plan.

Here’s what Pelosi said:

Pelosi said Wednesday, however, the panel would not be tasked with writing a specific bill, and brushed off the idea of the Green New Deal as a “suggestion.”

“It will be one of several or maybe many suggestions that we receive,” Pelosi said. “The green dream or whatever they call it, nobody knows what it is, but they’re for it right?”

Not exactly a ringing endorsement.

Pelosi’s skepticism likely stems from the fact that the Green New Deal is far from concrete. Ocasio-Cortez and Markey are expected to release an “outline” of the plan on Thursday at an event on Capitol Hill, but it has many miles to go before it becomes legislation to be deliberated.

And it may be a long, long time before it ever reaches that phase. For starters, the bill seeks to meet “100 percent of the power demand in the United States through clean, renewable, and zero-emission energy sources” within 10 years.

Going carbon neutral in 10 years is a monumental task, let alone the fact that “it would be tough to implement and potentially extremely expensive… if it passed,” according to NPR.
