Pelosi Thanks Dark Money Groups at Event Bashing Dark Money

The Democratic leader thanked several so-called "dark money" organizations at a press conference that focused on criticizing those groups' impact on the American political system.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic leaders held a press conference Monday to unveil ‘A Better Deal for Our Democracy,’ which aims to, “take power back from the special interests and give it to the American people.”

However, at the end of the event, Pelosi took time to thank about a half-dozen groups that benefit from “dark money.”

OpenSecrets defined “dark money” groups as “politically active nonprofits – principally 501(c)(4)s and 501(c)(6)s.”

According to OpenSecrets:

“The term “dark money” is often applied to this category of political spender because these groups do not have to disclose the sources of their funding – though a minority do disclose some or all of their donors, by choice or in response to specific circumstan

“What we tried to do today is to present to the American people a roadmap as to how they can weigh in and the difference they can make,” Pelosi said.

Pelosi then thanked several organizations including Democracy 21, Public Citizen, Center for American Progress, Common Cause, Every Voice, Sierra Club, and Center for Popular Democracy.

The Center for American Progress (CAP) is a is a 501(c)(3) and has received criticism from the Sunlight Foundation for lack of transparency around its donors. And the Center for Popular Democracy isn’t required to disclose its donors, according to OpenSecrets.

The Sierra Club, Democracy 21, Public Citizen, Common Cause and Every Voice have paid millions of dollars to lobbyist over the years.
