Pelosi’s Would-Be Replacement Falls to Primary Rival in Shocking Upset

The New York congressman’s loss to a 28-year-old, self-described socialist was the biggest political surprise of the year, but it explains where the Democratic Party is in 2018.

Pelosi’s Would-Be Replacement Falls to Primary Rival in Shocking Upset

Rep. Joe Crowley (D-NY), a ten-term incumbent who was being groomed to lead House Democrats, fell Tuesday night in a Democratic Party primary to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old Democratic socialist, in a shocking upset.

Crowley’s loss served as a wake-up call to incumbent Democrats across the country. Ocasio-Cortez ran on a campaign that promoted universal health care and abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Ocasio-Cortez was outraised by Crowley, nearly 10 to 1. And yet, she was able to find a way to win – and decisively.

What was most exciting for progressives is the degree to which Ocasio-Cortez ran to Crowley’s left. As a member of the DSA, her website is a laundry list of every blue-sky progressive policy: Medicare-for-all, housing and jobs guarantees, gun control, ending private prisons, abolishing ICE, and investment in post-hurricane Puerto Rico.

She had some help from a major Crowley misstep — he sent a surrogate to a primary debate, which led to a scathing editorial from the New York Times. “This is the second primary debate in which Mr. Crowley was a no-show. A spokeswoman for Mr. Crowley said he had scheduling conflicts that wouldn’t allow him to attend the two debates, inevitably leaving voters to wonder — what are we, chopped liver?” the editorial read.

And beyond Ocasio-Cortez’s win, Crowley’s loss has larger implications in Washington. In April, reports surfaced that Crowley was eyeing Pelosi’s post as leader of the Democratic House caucus.

For her part, Pelosi put out a statement Tuesday night after Crowley’s defeat:

Could other shocking upsets be on the horizon for Democrats? With only a handful of primaries left before the November midterms, time will tell.
