Vice President Mike Pence, in a speech to the Department of Defense on Thursday, told America’s leading generals that the Trump administration would work to form the U.S. Space Force by 2020.

“Our administration will soon take action to implement [DoD’s] recommendations with the the objective of establishing the United States Department of the Space Force by the year 2020,” Pence announced.

The vice president called on Congress to back the administration’s plan to create the department. He said that the president would include funding for the Space Force in the 2020 budget.

Pence cited the history of American military ingenuity in space in his speech:

The first American rockets in space were launched by our military. The first American satellites to orbit the Earth were on reconnaissance missions, peer behind the Iron Curtain. The first Americans to step forward to venture into the unknown were the world’s greatest aviators from the Navy, the Air Force, and the Marine Corps. And the next generation of Americans to confront the emerging threats and the boundless expanse of space will be wearing the uniform of the United States of America as well.

President Trump tweeted support for Pence’s speech, as well.
