Pence’s Olympics Guest is a Show of Defiance to North Korea

When Vice President Mike Pence attends the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in South Korea this month, his guest will be a signal to North Korea that the United States will not back down from North Korean aggression.

Fred Warmbier, the father of murdered American student Otto Warmbier, will attend the ceremony with Pence, mere miles from the North Korean border in PyeongChang, South Korea.

The younger Warmbier traveled to North Korea with a tourism group in early 2016. While on vacation in the reclusive communist dictatorship, authorities arrested Otto Warmbier on charges of theft, and the regime sentenced the American student to years in a North Korean hard labor camp.

The Obama administration failed to secure Warmbier’s release, but the Trump administration brought the student home. However, when the North Koreans returned the prisoner to the United States, it became clear that Warmbier had suffered torture at the hands of the Kim regime and slipped into a life-threatening coma.

Warmbier died soon after returning to the United States.

His father’s attendence at an event miles from the DMZ will likely be a statement to the North Koreans; Pyongyang’s depravity will not subjugate the Warmbiers, the Trump administration, or the United States with fear.
