One descendent of famed Native American Pocahontas is sticking up for President Trump’s attacks on Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). Debbie Porreco, a member of Trump’s golf club at Mar-a-Lago, told William Kelly and the Palm Beach Daily News that she doesn’t mind that the president uses her ancestor’s name to mock Warren.

According to Porreco, whose full name is Debbie “White Dove” Porreco and who grew up on an Indian reservation in Virginia, the president asked her if the mockery of Warren insulted her:

“He asked me one time at Mar-a-Lago. He said, ‘Do you mind me using ‘Pocahontas’ for American Indians?’ I said, ‘It doesn’t bother me,’” Porreco said Wednesday.

Porreco said it’s just Trump’s way of communicating.

“It’s just a term,” she said. “He’s not saying anything bad about Pocahontas, or bad about Native Americans. … Sometimes people read into things too much … they are just looking to say something bad about him.”

Trump uses the ‘Pocahontas’ moniker to refer to Warren, who claimed that she was a Native American while serving at several universities. Concrete evidence of this claim has been hard to come by, and many commentators have questioned Warren’s heritage.

The president’s use of the nickname is presumably his way of poking fun at the controversy.
