Polis Has Nearly Spent More on His Own CO-Gov. Campaign Than Outside Groups Combined

Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO) is spending so much of his own fortune on the Colorado gubernatorial race that he’s nearly outpacing all outside groups combined, according to data compiled by The Denver Post and published Monday.

The Post did not make this observation in their report, which focuses on outside spending in the gubernatorial contest. The math, however, is clear: Polis, who has spent just over $18 million on his campaign, has nearly spent more than the combined efforts of pro-Stapleton groups ($12.2 million) and pro-Polis groups ($6.5 million).

Here’s what the Denver Post‘s Ben Botkin wrote:

Polis, an entrepreneur and congressman from Boulder, is self-funding his campaign, which has already spent $18.06 million. That’s well above the spending of Stapleton, the state treasurer. In comparison, Stapleton’s campaign has spent $2.2 million so far.

But money from outside groups is making up for some of that imbalance. Pro-Stapleton outside groups have put at least $12.2 million into the governor’s race, nearly twice the $6.5 million that pro-Polis groups have put in at this point, according to filings with the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office.

The breakdown also underscores the overall spending advantage Polis and his allies enjoy over Stapleton and his allies: $24.56 million in favor of Polis, and $14.4 million in favor of Stapleton.

If it wasn’t clear before that Polis is seeking to buy his way to becoming Colorado’s next governor, the numbers outlined in this report add some clarity.
