Politico Reporter on Jealous: He Talked Socialism While His Platinum Amex Was on the Table

“He talked a lot about [Franklin D. Roosevelt]. But he did it with his platinum American Express card peeking out of the wallet he happened to have left on the table."

While Politico reporter Edward-Isaac Dovere interviewed Democrat Ben Jealous, a candidate for governor of Maryland, for his podcast “Off Message,” Jealous frequently talked about his socialist policy proposals while “his platinum American Express card [was] peeking out of the wallet he happened to have left on the table.”

Dovere noted that the pollsters have Jealous trailing Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R-MD) by a significant margin, but added that these pollsters had him behind during the Democratic primary, as well.

“So now maybe he’s going to win, or maybe he’s about to get crushed even worse than it’s looking right now. So that’s part of why I wanted to talk to Jealous,” Dovere said.

Dovere then explained how he headed over to Silver Spring Maryland to interview Jealous at his campaign headquarters.

“He, for example, really doesn’t want to be called a socialist,” Dovere said.

At a recent press conference, a reporter asked Jealous if he identified with the term “socialist.” Jealous responded by asking the reporter if she was “f***ing kidding” him.

But the questions about Jealous’s socialist tendencies have only increased in recent weeks, given some of the extreme policies he has proposed while on the campaign trail, including a single-payer health care plan that would cost Maryland taxpayers $24 billion a year.

“He works in socially responsible venture capital these days, which means as you’ll hear, he talked a lot about [Franklin D. Roosevelt]. But he did it with his platinum American Express card peeking out of the wallet he happened to have left on the table,” Dovere said.
