POLL: Alabama Voters Say They’re Ready to Replace Democrat Doug Jones

A new poll of Alabama voters reveals just how vulnerable Sen. Doug Jones (D-AL) is in his 2020 reelection fight. Jones, who won his seat by winning a special election to replace Jeff Sessions in 2017, is running for his first full term next year. But if this poll is an any indicator of his future success, Jones could be in serious trouble.

While Alabama voters are evenly split on Jones’ job performance, 45 approve and 44 disapprove, half of those surveyed said they’d support a generic Republican challenger:

However, 50% of voters surveyed said they would replace him with a Republican in 2020, 40% would re-elect Jones, with 10% not sure.

Without question, Jones is the most vulnerable Democrat up for reelection next year. In addition to simply being a Democrat running in a conservative state, Jones has repeatedly sided with party liberals like Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer on a variety of issues instead of respecting the will of the people who elected him.

Back in January, Democrats in the state described Jones as a “dead man walking,” politically speaking.

Critical to Republicans’ success next year in Alabama will be their ability to put up a candidate capable of taking down Jones. During the special election in 2017, Jones defeated Roy Moore, a deeply flawed candidate whose candidacy was doomed long before Election Day.
