Poll: Americans Rank These Modern Presidents as the Greatest

A new poll from the University of Virginia Center for Politics shows that Americans still prefer the classics when it comes to modern presidents. Asked to rate every president’s performance since Eisenhower on a scale of 1 to 10, respondents chose Democrat John F. Kennedy and Republican Ronald Reagan to occupy the top two spots.

Americans gave Kennedy an average rating of 6.56 out of 10 and Reagan an average of 6.29 out of 10. President Obama came in just behind the top two, with a 6.15 rating.

The two Bush presidents occupied the middle of the pack, but President Trump suffered in the ratings, coming in ahead only of Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon.

Republicans gave Trump a 7.2 rating out of 10, but the president suffered with independents and Democrats. The study pointed out that partisanship warped the view of Obama and Trump:

Today’s extraordinarily high level of partisanship mainly explains why the two most polarizing presidents among Democratic and Republican respondents are the two most recent, Obama and Trump. The difference between the average rating among Democrats and Republicans for Obama was 5.18, the largest margin of any president. Trump was next, with a sizable difference of 5.06. Clinton and Reagan tied for a distant third with a partisan difference of 2.88.

The choices of Kennedy and Reagan for the top two spots shows that Americans’ respect for the two Cold Warriors has endured past their initial popularity.
