POLL: Feinstein Crushing Competition in CA Senate Race

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) has a strong lead in her bid for a fifth full term, according to a new poll conducted by Public Policy Institute.

Feinstein leads state Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon 42 percent to 16 percent, according to the poll. Another 39 percent of voters are undecided.

Politico explains why Feinstein’s positioning is particularly good for her reelection chances:

While being under 50 percent is typically a red flag for an incumbent, there are signs in the poll that Feinstein is in strong position. She leads de León among Democratic voters, 66 percent to 20 percent. The vast majority of Republicans, 71 percent, are undecided — and a liberal challenger could struggle to attract those voters against Feinstein.

Much was made of de Leon’s strong showing at the California Democratic Party’s convention in San Diego last month. He defeated Feinstein among the party’s liberal convention attendees, 54-37. It was an embarrassing result for Feinstein, although the vote is ultimately meaningless.

As NTK noted at the time, de Leon faces not only long odds in the polls, but Feinstein’s massive cash advantage won’t help him increase his name recognition in a state with notoriously high-priced media markets.
