POLL: Just 1 in 4 Democrats Actually Support Eliminating ICE

A new AP-NORC poll of U.S. adults reveals that only a quarter of Democrats actually support abolishing the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency.

This summer saw an increasing number of calls to “abolish ICE” after it was revealed that families immigrating to the United States were being separated at the border, and that the separations were being overseen by ICE agents.

Democrats like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), who defeated 10-term incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley (D-NY) in a June primary, used abolishing ICE as a central tenet of her platform, along with support for Sen. Bernie Sanders’ Medicare for All, tuition-free college, and guaranteed jobs for all Americans.

Perhaps more importantly, however, the “abolish ICE” mantra picked up support from potential 2020 Democratic presidential candidates, like Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY). These themes could play out in potential match-ups next cycle, but the low level of support, even among Democrats, doesn’t bode well for Gillibrand and others.

Some potential Democratic presidential contenders, such as Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, backed getting rid of ICE in response to the separations. Others, including Sen. Kamala Harris of California, urged a rethinking of the agency, but stopped short of calling for its abolition.

President Donald Trump has seized on the Democratic criticism of ICE to paint the party as weak on immigration and national security. The administration reversed its separation policy amid an international outcry, but hundreds of children remain separated from their families.

ICE is politically polarizing, according to the poll. Fifty-seven percent of Democrats view the agency negatively, while 57 percent of Republicans view it positively.
