POLL: McCaskill Down by 8 to Hawley in Missouri Senate Race

It will not be a good day to work on the re-election campaign of Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO).

Axios reported that a new poll has McCaskill down a whopping eight points to Attorney General Josh Hawley (R-MO).

McCaskill fares worse than some of her colleagues in the Senate, like Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-IN), who is also losing to a Republican opponent, but by six points instead of eight, and despite President Trump’s approval rating being worse in Indiana than it is in Missouri.

It’s hard to pinpoint any one reason why McCaskill is doing poorly, but she’s had to fight several tough headlines as of late.

  • She voted against the president’s immigration plan in a state where Trump is still popular
  • In response to attacks on her record, McCaskill basically admitted on Twitter that she’s a career politician
  • A study found McCaskill’s wealth has increased nearly 40 percent since she first joined the U.S. Senate, not exactly a great way to connect with middle-class Missouri voters
  • And, somewhat embarrassingly, McCaskill appeared not to know the difference between a sheriff and a police officer at an Oscars party she hosted this weekend

If this new poll is any indicator, it’s going to be a long 2018 for McCaskill.
