POLL: McCaskill’s Net Approval Drops to -11, a 19-Point Drop Since Early 2017

Sen. Claire McCaskill’s (D-MO) net approval rating among Missourians dropped seven points across the third quarter of 2018, according to Morning Consult‘s quarterly tracking of approval ratings for every U.S. senator.

McCaskill, whose net approval rating was +8 in both the first and second quarters of 2017, is now 11 points underwater. That’s a 19-percentage point drop in McCaskill’s net approval over 18 months – a staggering fall for a senator that was once more popular than unpopular among her constituents.

Here’s how her approval ratings have tracked, quarter to quarter:

McCaskill’s approval ratings freefall may be one reason why Attorney General Josh Hawley (R-MO) has taken a slight lead on McCaskill in the RealClearPolitics average of Missouri U.S. Senate polling. As of Wednesday morning, that average didn’t even include a new Reuters poll out of Missouri that has Hawley leading McCaskill by one and an October Missouri Rising Action poll that showed Hawley up eight points.
