Poll: Menendez Lead Over GOP Evaporating in New Jersey

Could Republicans score a huge win over Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) in one of the bluest states in the country? The Democrat’s ethics problems could be taking their toll, as Republican candidate Bob Hugin whittled Menendez’s lead down from 17 points in March to a six-point lead on Wednesday.

According to a Quinnipiac Poll of New Jersey voters this month, 43 percent would pick Menendez and 37 percent would pick Hugin. In March, the margin was 49-32 in favor of Menendez.

Quinnipiac’s polling analyst said the poll sounded the alarm for Menendez:

“As Sen. Robert Menendez sees his once dominant lead whittled down to single digits, New Jersey voters are sending a clear message. They are troubled by the ethics cloud hanging over him,” said Mary Snow, polling analyst for the Quinnipiac Poll.

“While voters prefer Sen. Menendez over Republican Bob Hugin in deep blue New Jersey, they give the incumbent negative approval and favorability ratings,” Snow added.

Only 40 percent of New Jersey voters approve of the job Menendez is doing, compared with 47 percent who disapprove.

A federal jury acquitted Menendez of corruption charges in 2017, but the ethics controversy has clearly taken a toll on the senator’s popularity. Salomon Melgen, the alleged criminal partner of Menendez, was sentenced to 17 years in prison earlier this year.
