Poll: More than Half of Democrats Want Congress to Prioritize Impeaching Trump

A new Morning Consult poll says that 53 percent of Democrats want Congress to prioritize impeaching President Donald Trump.  Only 29 percent of independents and just 5 percent of Republicans agree, however.

Still, the numbers among Democrats shot up 14 percentage points since the firm’s January poll, which found 39 percent of Democrats said impeachment should be a priority.

Of those who believe Trump should be impeached, 47 percent said they believe he is simply unfit for office, while 50 percent said they believe he has committed an impeachable offense. The poll did not specify the alleged offense.

The numbers among Democrats are a victory of sorts for liberal billionaire Tom Steyer, who has sunk millions of dollars into an impeachment campaign dating back to 2017.

The good news for Trump? Despite an uptick in Democrats wanting impeachment, Trump’s overall numbers have not moved significantly.

Among voters overall, polling conducted throughout the Trump presidency has found that support for impeachment has been mostly steady, though voters’ reasoning for their support has varied slightly.

Likely the biggest factor that could impact Americans’ view on impeachment is Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report, which CNN reported earlier this week could be submitted to the newly minted attorney general, William Barr, as early as next week.
