POLL: Nicholson Narrowly Leads Vukmir, Baldwin Underwater

State Sen. Leah. Vukmir and businessman Kevin Nicholson are locked in a tight Republican primary to win the right to challenge Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) this fall, according to the latest Marquette Law School poll released Wednesday.

The Marquette Law School Poll released Wednesday found Nicholson with 37 percent support, Vukmir at 32 percent and 30 percent of GOP poll respondents saying they don’t know. He had led Vukmir by nine points in Marquette’s March poll.

The tightening race is sure to attract more attention as the August 14 primary approaches, but also catching Republicans’ attention is Baldwin’s favorability rating. According to the poll, Baldwin is viewed favorably by 41 percent of registered voters and unfavorably by 43 percent.

Baldwin’s unfavorable numbers have risen 4 percentage points since the previous Marquette University Law School poll in February. Baldwin’s favorability in that poll was also underwater by two points, 37-39.

Baldwin blamed her poor showing among Wisconsin voters on the Koch brothers back in March.

“We’re a terribly polarized state,” Baldwin said. “What I would say also is that Wisconsin has seen more outside spending, more super PAC spending, particularly from the Koch brothers.”

“These out-of-state special interests think they own Wisconsin, and they’ve been attacking me, and that certainly contributes to how people feel about politics,” Baldwin said.

The incumbent senator only has a few short months to convince Wisconsin voters she deserves another term. Baldwin led both Vukmir and Nicholson in potential head-to-head match-ups, according to Wednesday’s poll.
