Poll: One Issue Surged to Top of Americans’ Attention in July

NBC News and The Wall Street Journal released a new poll on Monday, revealing where Americans stand on their approval of Donald Trump, their support of a particular party for this fall’s congressional ballot, and what issues they care most about.

On the first two subjects, NBC News and The Wall Street Journal found President Trump’s approval rating ticked up, from 44 percent to 45 percent, and the Democrats’ congressional advantage this fall shrank from 10 points (50-40) to six points (49-43).

On the latter subject, one issue that was on virtually no one’s radar in June 2018 has surged to near the top of voters’ attention in July 2018.

The Senate’s confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court is the “1st choice” issue for one in ten voters (11 percent), and the first or second choice for nearly one in five voters (19 percent).

The economy (36 percent) also displaced health care (33 percent) as the top issue for American voters. In June 2018, health care (38 percent) narrowly topped the economy (37 percent).

Immigration went from the fifth-top issue in June (after health care, the economy, guns, and taxes and spending) to the third-top issue in July. The family separation crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border may have something to do with this rise.

But for Americans in July, the Supreme Court vacancy is the fourth-top issue. That number may increase as the Senate draws closer to hearings, and a confirmation vote, on Kavanaugh.
