Poll: Plurality of Americans Say Tariffs Will Hurt U.S. Economy

As President Trump basks in a strong economy, a new poll suggests Americans see one of his recent actions as a threat to all the success of the last few years.

Politico and Morning Consult reported on Wednesday that a plurality of Americans, 45 percent, believe Trump’s tariffs on aluminum and steel imports – which primarily impact America’s allies – will hurt the U.S. economy.

Only 35 percent of voters think raising tariffs on aluminum and steel imports will help the U.S. economy, compared to 45 percent who think raising tariffs will hurt the economy. But 20 percent of voters don’t know or have no opinion.

A clear majority (59 percent) also say tariffs will make steel and aluminum more expensive for U.S. businesses.

Despite voters’ ambivalence to the tariffs, a 59 percent majority say imposing tariffs on aluminum and steel will make those materials more expensive for U.S. businesses.

GOP senators are working on a bill that would require congressional approval for the president to levy tariffs for national security reasons.

President Trump would likely reject such a bill on its own. He has at least one talking point in his favor: the U.S. trade deficit “fell to a seven-month low in April,” according to the Commerce Department.
