Poll: Plurality of Americans Support Deploying Troops to Border

More Americans support President Trump’s plan to send National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexican border than oppose it, according to a new Politico poll.

The poll, conducted in concert with Morning Consult, found that 48 percent support the deploying of troops to the border, with 42 percent opposed.

Republicans strongly favor the plan, and independents are divided at 44 percent support and opposition:

“President Trump’s decision to deploy National Guard troops is a hugely popular move with his base,” said Dropp. “Sixty percent of Trump voters ‘strongly’ approve of the decision. Among this same group, 49 percent ‘strongly’ approve of Trump’s job performance overall.”

The partisan split on the issue underscores this divide: Just 22 percent of Democratic voters support sending troops to the border, compared to 84 percent of Republicans. Independents are evenly divided: 44 percent support sending the National Guard to the border, and 44 percent oppose doing so.

And in more good news for the GOP, voters told pollsters that they trust Republicans more than Democrats on immigration issues, 43-39 percent. And the president’s approval rating ticked up one point to 43 percent.
