POLL: Plurality of Voters Blame Democrats for Looming Shutdown

A Quinnipiac poll released late Thursday showed most voters, by a slim margin, are blaming Democrats for the potential government shutdown.

When asked, “If a government shutdown does occur, who would you blame more: Republicans in Congress, Democrats in Congress, or President Trump?” more than a third (34 percent) of respondents said Democrats. In a close second were Republicans at 32 percent, and President Trump came in a more-distant third with just 21 percent.

When Congress failed to pass a spending bill in 2013, Republicans were the minority party and largely shouldered the blame for the shutdown. Today, Democrats are in the minority, and the shutdown is largely being triggered by their insistence that an immigration provision – namely, that so-called DREAMers are granted legal status in the U.S. – be included in a government funding bill.

The same poll says Americans, by a wide margin, support granting legal status to the children of undocumented immigrants. But it also says voters are able to separate the two issues – a task Democrats have thus far proven incapable of doing.

If the two sides are unable to agree on a funding bill by midnight Friday, expect many more polls gauging the American people’s sense of who is to blame.
