POLL: Republican Young Kim Leads in Critical California House Race

Republican Young Kim leads her Democrat opponent, Gil Cisneros, according to a new poll of the Orange County-based congressional district.

The poll, conducted by Monmouth University, found Young leading Cisneros by a 10-point margin, 51-41. In a “Democratic surge” model, that lead shrinks to six points, 49-43.

That puts Kim in a strong position to win the coveted 39th Congressional District seat. Kim and Cisneros are running to replace retiring Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA).

Here’s a breakdown of the demographics:

Kim leads among white voters, 58 percent to 36 percent, while Cisneros has a 25-point lead among Hispanic voters, 54 percent to 29 percent. Among Asian-American voters, the two candidates are neck-and-neck, with Cisneros — a Navy veteran and self-funding former Mega Millions jackpot winner — taking 43 percent to Kim’s 41 percent.

Among male voters, Kim has a 15-point advantage, 52 percent to 37 percent. Cisneros’ lead among female voters is smaller: 47 percent to 40 percent.

Kim, if elected, would be the first Korean American to serve in Congress since 1999. According to an NBC News story published last month, there could be as many as four Korean-Americans in Congress next year.
