POLL: Rick Scott Expands Lead Over Bill Nelson in Florida

Republican Gov. Rick Scott leads Democrat Sen. Bill Nelson in the U.S. Senate race in Florida, according to a new poll released by Florida Atlantic University (FAU).

The poll of registered voters found Scott with 45 percent and Nelson with just 39 percent. That six-point edge for Scott is an expansion from his lead in the same poll the previous month. In July, Scott led Nelson 44-40, according to FAU. While the two-point jump for Scott is a minor one, it’s a step in the right direction for the governor.

Making matters worse for Nelson, he’s largely unknown among voters and his approval rating was slightly underwater, while Scott held a 15-point net positive rating among Florida’s voters:

The poll results indicate many people don’t know much about Nelson, a fixture in Florida politics for decades.

Nelson’s approval was 35 percent, with 36 percent disapproval and 29 percent neutral or not having an opinion.

Scott had 48 percent approval, 33 percent disapproval, with 19 percent neutral or not having an opinion.

The month of August has been particularly brutal for Nelson, who recently claimed that Russians had hacked into the Florida voter rolls. While fact checkers beat up Nelson for the claim, the issue was put to bed on Tuesday when the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI penned a joint letter batting down Nelson’s claims.
