POLL: Rick Scott Leads Bill Nelson in This Key Demographic

A new poll released by Politico and AARP found that Gov. Rick Scott (R-FL) leads Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) by one percentage point among Florida voters, 40-39.

But, among Florida voters aged 50 and older, Scott’s lead expands to a nine-point margin, 44-35. The poll “exposes a political divide that bodes relatively well for Republicans when compared to some nationwide polling that shows a more-favorable environment for Democrats,” Politico’s Marc Caputo wrote Monday.

Generally speaking, older voters are more reliable voters, but these numbers are particularly good for Scott because of Florida’s vast retirement population.

The results were similarly good for Republicans on the generic ballot in Florida.

Overall, Florida voters by 40-38 percent favor a generic Democrat for Congress or for governor. But those 50 or older want a generic Republican by 42-35 percent for governor and 41-36 percent for Congress.

A group of Florida political insiders predicted last month that Scott would defeat Nelson.
