POLL: Trump’s Best Senate Battleground States

A new Morning Consult poll shows President Donald Trump with a net positive or neutral approval rating in six major battleground states in the upcoming midterm elections.

Those states include:

  • Florida (net neutral), which features Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) defending his seat
  • Indiana (net +1), which features Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-IN)
  • Montana (net +4), which features Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT)
  • Missouri (net +5), which features Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO)
  • North Dakota (net +10), which features Sen. Heidi Heitkamp
  • And West Virginia (net +26), which features Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV)

These six incumbent Democrats will likely all face competitive general election challenges from Republicans.

  • In Florida, Gov. Rick Scott (R-FL) is expected to announce his Senate candidacy as early as next week
  • Donnelly, Tester, and Manchin have several Republican challengers in Indiana, Montana, and West Virginia, respectively
  • And McCaskill and Heitkamp face challenges from statewide elected officials in Missouri and North Dakota

Overall, Trump’s approval rating is down four points since February, according to the last Morning Consult poll.

The new figures represent a 4 point net decline from February, when 43 percent approved and 52 percent disapproved of Trump. The changes were driven mainly by a loss of enthusiasm among the president’s independent and Republican supporters: Strong approval for Trump was down 2 points among GOP voters, to 45 percent, and 1 point among independents, to 13 percent.

Trump’s approval is likely to continue its up-and-down pattern through November’s midterms. The key for GOP candidates in these states will be to stick with the president on popular issues and show a willingness to break with the president where necessary.
