Secretary of State Mike Pompeo wouldn’t rule out running for retiring Sen. Pat Roberts’ (R-KS) Senate seat in 2020 during an interview with Fox News’ Martha MacCallum on Wednesday.

MacCallum asked Pompeo about reports that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) urged him to run for Roberts’ seat.

“Lots of folks have reached out to me and suggested I ought to do it,” Pompeo said. “I have suggested to them that I have a very full plate as secretary of state, and I intend to keep doing this so long as President Trump will commit to it.”

MacCallum followed up by asking Pompeo if that meant he had no intention to get involved in the Kansas Senate race.

“Every day I’m trying to make sure I’m doing what President Trump wants me to do to keep America safe. That’s my singular focus,” Pompeo said.

MacCallum then asked Pompeo if McConnell was trying to change his mind about that.

“I spoke to Senator McConnell once; he asked me if I’d think about it, and I told him I appreciated the phone call,” Pompeo responded.

MacCallum then pressed Pompeo on whether he would support former Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who has been rumored to be thinking about running for Roberts’ Senate seat.

Pompeo dodged MacCallum’s question citing that it might be a federal violation if he answered it but added that he appreciated MacCallum’s interest in this topic.
