CIA Director Mike Pompeo, President Trump’s pick to be the new secretary of state, cleared his first hurdle to confirmation on Monday with a Senate Foreign Relations Committee vote of 11-9 in his favor.

The approval was made possible by a number of last-minute endorsements and one vote switch.

The tidal wave started in the morning with Sen. Joe Manchin’s (D-WV) endorsement of Pompeo:

It followed with Sen. Joe Donnelly’s (D-IN) endorsement. Both Manchin and Donnelly are vulnerable Democratic incumbents up for reelection in 2018.

Then Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) switched his opposition to support.

And Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) “volunteered to change his vote to ‘present’ — making the vote 11 in favor, 9 opposed and 1 present,” according to The Washington Post.

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ), who also announced his support for Pompeo on Monday, called Coons’ move “[s]tand up.”

With easier-than-expected committee approval, Pompeo’s confirmation by the full U.S. Senate appears close to guaranteed.
