Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in a speech at the Heritage Foundation on Monday, rolled out the Trump administration’s long-term strategy to contain Iran’s regional and nuclear ambitions.

“We’ll continue to work with allies to counter the regime’s destabilizing activity in the region, block their financing of terror, and address Iran’s proliferation of missiles and other advanced weapons systems that threaten peace and stability,” Pompeo said.

The secretary of state emphasized the administration’s commitment to preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

To achieve these goals, U.S. policy will rely on three major pillars.

“Unprecedented financial pressure”

Pompeo said that new sanctions will punish Iran’s misbehavior. Unless Iran changes its policy of aggression, he said, the United States would continue to tighten the financial noose around the regime. “These will indeed end up being the strongest sanctions in history,” Pompeo predicted.

“Deter Iranian aggression”

The Department of Defense and U.S. intelligence agencies will do all in their power to “crush” adverse Iranian actions across the world, Pompeo said. That includes curbing their naval capabilities, defending against cyber attacks, and hunting down Iranian operatives. “Iran will never again have carte blanche to dominate the Middle East,” he said.

“Advocate tirelessly for the Iranian people”

The secretary of state demanded that the Iranian regime begin respecting the human rights of its citizens, and he said that the United States would back their desire for liberty. Pompeo cited Iranian anti-government protests from earlier in the year as examples of popular unrest in the country. The president tweeted support for Iranian protesters when they occurred.
