President Trump’s nominee to be the next secretary of state, CIA Director Mike Pompeo, told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Thursday that his job as the nation’s chief diplomat would be to prevent a confrontation with a nuclear North Korea.

Pressed by Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) if he would like to see “regime change” in Pyongyang, Pompeo said that he had never pushed for a removal of the Kim regime.

“We have a responsibility to achieve a condition where Kim Jong-un is unable to threaten the United States of America with a nuclear weapon,” he said.

Cardin pushed, asking again if he wanted to topple the regime in Pyongyang.

Pompeo again denied that his main goal was expelling Kim Jong-un.

“Just to be clear, my role as a diplomat is to make sure that we never get to a place where we have to confront the difficult situation in Korea,” he said.
