"Well, you know the leader of the country is Ayatollah Khameini. That's who's running the show in Iran. I think that would be an important and interesting conversation."

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Sunday that President Trump would be willing to talk with the supreme leader of Iran, Ali Khameini, at the United Nations this week.

Fox News Chris Wallace asked Pompeo about whether the United States is behind an attack on a military parade in Iran this weekend, and if Trump has any plans to meet with Iranian officials this week at the UN general assembly.

“Well let me take your second question first. I don’t know if there are any plans to date. The president has been pretty clear, if there are constructive conversations to be had with the Iranians the president is happy to have them,” Pompeo said.

Wallace followed up and asked Pompeo if that means Trump would be willing to talk with the president of Iran, Hassan Rouhani.

“Well, you know the leader of the country is Ayatollah Khameini. That’s who’s running the show in Iran. I think that would be an important and interesting conversation,” Pompeo said.

Wallace pressed Pompeo on whether that is a serious offer to meet with Ayatollah Khameini, or just talk.

“The president said he’ll talk with anyone if we can constructive conservation. We want Iran to stop being the world’s largest state sponsor of terror,” Pompeo said.

Pompeo added that Iran has made no attempt to stop being the world’s largest state sponsor of terror, but did not emphatically deny that the U.S. was not involved in the attack on the Iranian military parade.
