The family separation controversy keeps growing for the Trump administration, with both the global leader of the Catholic Church and a quarter of the U.S. Senate’s GOP members calling on Trump to end the policy overnight.

In an exclusive with Reuters, Pope Francis said the Trump administration policy is “immoral.”

Speaking to Reuters, the Pope said he supported recent statements by U.S. Catholic bishops who called the separation of children from their parents “contrary to our Catholic values” and “immoral”.

“It’s not easy, but populism is not the solution,” Francis said on Sunday night.

And in a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions released Tuesday night, 13 GOP senators – led by Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) – called on the administration “to stop the separation of families pursuant to the Department’s zero tolerance policy.”

The president of the United States or his attorney general have the authority to stop the policy. But Trump has no intention of doing so, Axios reported on Wednesday morning.

Speaking to House Republicans at the Capitol last evening, President Trump admitted the political pressure over family separations at the border is growing. But a top aide said Trump “doesn’t want to look weak” by backing down.

Trump has tried to punt the issue to Congress, but that would require two unlikely events: 1) a legislative solution that can pass a House rife with interparty and intraparty divisions, and 2) an effort that can pass the Senate in 60 votes, with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) currently opposing a legislative fix.
