Possibly Illegal Mailers Targeting GOP in 3 Crucial Senate Races

It’s not surprising that Missourians, Hoosiers, and Montanans are receiving mailers concerning their hotly-contested U.S. Senate races. It is surprising that a mystery group is behind a set of mailers that are calling on voters to support libertarian candidates over Republicans.

The Kansas City Star reported that some mailers are targeting Attorney General Josh Hawley (R-MO), who’s in a tough race against Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO).

Voters in at least four counties around the state have received political mailers from an unknown source attacking Republican U.S. Senate candidate Josh Hawley on guns — and implying that they should support a third-party or independent candidate.

The mailers fail to identify who paid for them, which is required by law. But they appear to be connected to mailers attacking GOP senate candidates in Montana and Indiana.

Hawley’s spokeswoman blamed McCasill for “dirty trick[s]” in the race. McCaskill’s campaign condemned the mailers and “all dark money efforts.”

As the Star noted, the mailers are also running in Indiana and Montana. The same tactics appeared to motivate the libertarian candidate in Montana, Rick Breckenridge, to drop out and endorse Republican Matt Rosendale.

It’s not the first time mystery groups have supported libertarians in an effort to benefit Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT), though. In 2012, a “hunters-and-anglers group sympathetic to Democratic U.S. Sen. Jon Tester” spent half-a-million dollars “telling voters to support the Libertarian candidate, Dan Cox.”
