Potential Pelosi Challenger: She Lost Us House Seats

Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-OH) said Wednesday that she hasn’t decided whether she’ll challenge House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi when the California Democrat officially runs for speaker of the House, but her recent comment sound like someone who very well could.

Fudge told the Cleveland Plain Dealer this week that she has received encouragement to challenge Pelosi for speaker. “People are asking me to do it, and I am thinking about it,” she said.

On Thursday, Fudge ratcheted up the rhetoric another notch, pushing back on the narrative that Pelosi won back the majority for Democrats and arguing that Pelosi contributed to Democrats losing seats in the House over the years.

“She didn’t do this by herself,” Fudge explained, discussing the Democrats taking back control of the House in last week’s midterm elections. “She also was the person who over the last eight years, lost seats. It’s one thing to give people credit for winning if you also make them responsible for losing.”

Anti-Pelosi Democrats in the House have expressed confidence that they have the votes to prevent the longtime congresswoman from taking back the speaker’s gavel.

According to the Hill, they claim to have 17 “solidified signatures” from Democrats pledging to oppose Pelosi.

For her part, Pelosi has expressed “100 percent” confidence that she will prevail in the House Democrat leadership contest, and openly encouraged Fudge and any other potential challenger to join the race.
