Pressure’s On for These 5 Dems With Possible Pompeo Vote This Week

Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV), Joe Donnelly (D-IN), Claire McCaskill (D-MO), Mark Warner (D-VA), and Doug Jones (D-AL) are about to have a tough week ahead.

All five – and especially the first three, who are up for reelection in 2018 – will be under pressure from the Trump administration, the GOP Congress, and its allies this week to confirm CIA Director Mike Pompeo to lead the State Department.

Reporting from multiple outlets includes those five names as potential Pompeo votes. From Bloomberg:

On the Senate floor, the focus will be on moderate Democrats who say they’re keeping an open mind on Pompeo. Among them are Doug Jones of Alabama and Mark Warner of Virginia, who as the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee says he has a strong working relationship with Pompeo.

And from NBC News:

Of those, only Heitkamp — a red state Democrat facing a tough re-election bid — has so far said she plans to support him. Other Democrats facing the same 2018 calculus include Donnelly, Manchin, and McCaskill. Seven of the 14 Democrats who supported Pompeo’s 2017 confirmation as CIA director have said they won’t support Pompeo as secretary of state and six have not yet revealed their position.

As prior reporting indicates, Manchin, Donnelly, and McCaskill in particular are in the proverbial hot seat. Voting down a secretary of state nominee would force the president to start from scratch ahead of a crucial and historic potential summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. That’s a hard sell to red-state voters in an election year.
