National Democrats’ preferred candidates won most of the races in Tuesday’s primaries in Kentucky, Georgia, Arkansas, and the runoff in Texas, but not all of them.

In Kentucky, former fighter pilot Amy McGrath defeated Mayor Jim Gray (D-Lexington), who was backed by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC). She will now face incumbent Rep. Andy Barr (R-KY) in the general election this fall. Barr already has $2.3 million in the bank, and McGrath will face an uphill battle to challenge him in November.

Billy Piper, the former chief of staff for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, said McGrath “district shopped” until she found the 6th District, mimicking a last-minute ad the Gray campaign launched criticizing McGrath for moving to the district last year.

“I think that the Democrats have nominated the worst possible candidate they could have nominated,” Piper said.

In Georgia, Democrats are celebrating Stacey Abrams’ gubernatorial victory. The former state House minority leader won by a wide margin Tuesday in a two-person field. Abrams’ campaign did what many could not since 2016: unite the Clinton and Sanders wings of the Democratic Party. She earned endorsements from both 2016 Democratic presidential candidates, along with Sens. Kamala Harris (D-CA) and Cory Booker (D-NJ).

But before Democrats coronate Abrams, a note of caution: Democrat candidates received 553,397 votes in Tuesday’s primary, according to the New York Times’ election results tracker. Republicans, meanwhile, racked up 607,660 votes. Democrats have long sought to turn Georgia blue, but given the voter turnout in the primary, that will be easier said than done.
