Rep.-elect Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) said he called “Saturday Night Live” star Pete Davidson after the comedian published an Instagram post with a cryptic, suicidal message on Saturday.

During an interview with KPRC-TV’s Khambrel Marshall, Crenshaw said he called Davidson, who famously mocked Crenshaw last month for his eye patch. Crenshaw last his eye while serving as a Navy SEAL in Afghanistan in 2012. The two made amends, and Crenshaw appeared on SNL the next week after winning his Houston-area congressional seat.

“I talked to him personally yesterday,” Crenshaw said. “We don’t go back very far, we’re not very good friends, but I think he appreciated hearing from me. And what I told him was this: everybody has a purpose in this world. God put you here for a reason. It’s your job to find that purpose. And you should live that way, seeking out that purpose, not expecting it to be given to you by anybody else.”

Crenshaw said that he also told Davidson, “Know you have value and that you do more good than you realize for [other] people.”

Davidson’s Instagram post, which has since been deleted, said: “I really don’t want to be on this earth anymore. I’m doing my best to stay here for you but I actually don’t know how much longer i can last. all I’ve ever tried to do was help people. just remember I told you so.”

Crenshaw, who defeated Democrat Todd Litton last month, will officially begin representing Texas’ 2nd Congressional District on January 3.
