Rep. Steve Stivers (R-OH) took a CNN host to task over the GOP’s plan to overhaul the U.S. tax system on Thursday morning, explaining simple economics to him.

CNN’s Chris Cuomo argued that the tax plan would favor the rich over the poor and the middle class, which Strivers refuted.

“The middle class does not do best – why not?” Cuomo asked.

“The middle class does do best,” Stivers retorted. “Our [work] on the corporate tax rate will grow our economy. We should stop arguing about how we divide up the pie and start growing the pie.”

Stivers, the chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, explained that more investment would lead to more jobs and higher wages.

Cuomo tried to push back, saying that the tax plan “might” only have those effects. “You don’t know that they’re going to raise wages, and that this money will necessarily trickle down to the workers.”

“Chris, I know it because I took an economics class,” Stivers fired back. “You grow the economy, it’ll put pressure on wages.”

According to the representative, economic growth would lead to more jobs, leading to a labor shortage, leading to increased middle class wages.
